The Strake Jesuit campus was transformed into a tropical haven on Sunday, March 1, as thousands of students, families, and alumni gathered for 2026’s Spring Fling. Under the theme “Treasure Island,” the annual festival combined high-energy carnival games, international cuisine, and a deep-rooted commitment to the school’s mission of accessibility.

While the day was filled with laughter and tropical decor, the origins of the event remain a point of pride for the community. First organized in 1971 by Fr. Michael Alchediak, S.J., and dedicated Jesuit families during a period of school financial turbulence, Spring Fling was the engine that kept the school’s doors open. Today, that legacy continues: all proceeds from the day are dedicated to the financial aid program, which currently supports one-third of the student body.

The entire school, from Parsley Center to Moran Dining Hall, became covered with colorful decorations and food stands sporting a variety of cuisines. One of the most popular corners of the festival was the international food section, where the enticing scent of grilling meats, vegetables, and food drew constant crowds. The stations included a variety of cuisines from Asia to South America to Africa to all the way back home in Houston and the states.

The “Treasure Island” theme was felt most in the game zones, where students were seen toting around prizes like giant liter sodas and bags containing goldfish.

In Parsley Center, transformed into a highstakes “Casino,” the Blackjack tables and craps tables were surrounded by students and adults trying their luck at doubling their doubloons. “The casino is always one of my favorite parts of the event,” said Patrick Forrester ’ 27. “There’s nothing quite like gambling for doubloons with my friends.” Additionally, the marketplace in the atrium offered a space for families to shop for artisan goods.

Outside, the Dunking Booth remained a crowd favorite as students lined up for the chance to dunk their favorite teachers and deans. For those with a sweet tooth, the Cake Spin provided lucky winners with their pick of delicious treats donated by SJ families.

The event also served as a major homecoming, with alumni returning to visit the Chapel of St. Ignatius for Sunday Mass before hitting the festival grounds.

Representatives from the Guadalupe Radio Network were on-site, conducting live interviews. The 2026 Spring Fling proved once again that the “treasure” of Strake Jesuit is found in its community. Under blue skies, the SJ family enjoyed a perfect day of celebration, leaving with the satisfaction of knowing that another year of Jesuit education has been secured for those in need. It is exciting to see what 2027 Spring Fling will bring to the Strake Jesuit community!
