Golf Ends On An Upswing

Alexander Wang ’22

The Strake Jesuit Golf team has just finished up their 2020-2021 season, and what a ride it has been!

Over the past two months, the Jesuit varsity team has racked up some impressive performances and been able to accomplish different feats. During the district championship, the varsity team of Alex Wang ’22, Matthew Byrne ’21, Matt Parker ’21, Baird Bright ’23, Charlie Cox ’22, Drew Huskinson ’21, Luke Peters ’21, Harry Hudgins ’23, Emmet Vandegrift ’22, and Chance Mathews ’21 all competed in the tournament. Varsity A finished at a score of 640, going 322 the first day and 318 the second day to finish second overall and in turn punching them a ticket to the regional championship held at Gleannloch Pines Golf club. Alex Wang won districts with an impressive showing of 72-74, besting the field by 9 shots. Varsity B shot 700, 359-341 to finish 4th place overall, with Luke Peters leading the way with a 81-82.

At regionals, Gleannloch proved to be a good challenge for the SJ team, where all of the top teams from the Greater Houston area came to compete for a chance to go to states. The boys gave it a great effort, led by Alex Wang’s 75-75 and Matthew Byrne’s 78-75. The team total of 626 was one of the lowest in the past few years and was highlighted by Matthew’s iconic chip on the last hole of his Jesuit career! When the dust had settled, the team score of 626 was good enough for 9th place overall and was one of the best performances from Jesuit golf in a while.

The team is excited for what’s to come next year!
