Strake Jesuit Varsity Football beat the Pearland Oilers 21-14 at the Pearland Stadium, The Rig on October 18. Senior QB Will Dickason, Senior RB Dylan Campbell, Junior WR Robert Smith, and the Crusader defense led the way for the big upset in Pearland’s homecoming game.
The first half went by quickly, with only a couple of drives by both teams. Pearland managed to run for one touchdown while Jesuit remained scoreless. The offense was working, with Thomas Jewett having a twenty -five yard reception and Robert Smith having multiple receptions. But key mistakes before the half left the score 7-0.
Pearland scored their last touchdown after a 15 yard run. But after that the Crusaders began to fire on all cylinders. On the ensuing drive, Will Dickason lofted a pass up to Senior WR Corlan Joubert for 37 yards. Dickason then proceeded to run it in himself for a 17 yard touchdown.
The defense came up with an excellent stop to set up the next drive, which didn’t last long. Late in the third quarter, Dylan Campbell blew through the defensive front seven for an explosive 72 yard touchdown. This tied the game at 14-14.
The Rig crackled with tension as each play was made, but the Crusader defense came up with another big stop.
This paved the way for the final touchdown of the game. Will Dickason and the Crusaders marched down the field, with a fourth down conversion on a pass to Robert Smith. At the goal line, Dickason pitched the ball to Dylan Campbell going right who faked the run and then drew his arm back to pass. He tossed it up to Robert Smith, and at first it looked as if it was going to be intercepted. But Robert leapt up and over the defender, tearing the ball and the win away for the incredible touchdown catch.
With one last drive, the Oilers could not overcome a stout Jesuit defense, and the Crusaders took home the W in the Rig. Moving to 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in district.
